Maev – At A Glance
Spot & Tango’s dog food subscription service is among the top choices for dog food. They focus on preparing fresh, nutritious meals tailored to each dog’s needs and deliver them directly to your door for added convenience.
A major challenge in preparing homemade dog food is meeting the specific nutritional requirements of dogs. High-quality commercial dog foods often feature a label stating that the product is balanced and complete as verified by the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO).
Recipes
Spot & Tango offers personalized, pre-portioned meal plans tailored to your dog’s specific breed, age, weight, and health needs. Their recipes, crafted by animal nutritionists, feature locally sourced lean proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables, and premium carbohydrates. Prepared in USDA-certified kitchens, each meal is designed to meet the nutritional standards set by AAFCO for all life stages, making them suitable for both puppies and adult dogs.
It’s generally recommended to transition your dog’s diet slowly by mixing a quarter of the new food with three-quarters of the old food for a few days. Then, gradually increase the proportion of new food, moving to half new and half old, and continuing this process until your dog is fully adjusted to the new food.
Ingredients
There are three Fresh Recipes to choose from: Turkey + Quinoa, Beef + Brown Rice, and Lamb + Sweet Potato.
The Turkey + Quinoa recipe includes turkey, turkey liver, spinach, carrots, sweet potatoes, chickpeas, quinoa, apples, safflower oil, Spot & Tango’s nutrient blend, potatoes, salt, and salmon oil.
The Beef + Brown Rice recipe contains beef, beef liver, butternut squash, spinach, carrots, brown rice, potatoes, safflower oil, apples, Spot & Tango’s nutrient blend, salt, and salmon oil.
The Lamb + Sweet Potato recipe includes lamb, lamb liver, sweet potatoes, kale, carrots, brown rice, Spot & Tango’s nutrient blend, apples, safflower oil, salmon oil, and salt.
Spot & Tango meals are free from fillers, additives, and preservatives, which is why they are delivered frozen. Keep the food pouches in your freezer until you’re ready to serve them. To prepare, simply transfer a pouch to the fridge the night before feeding or thaw it quickly using warm water or the microwave.
Spot & Tango follows the philosophy that if humans can’t eat it, pets shouldn’t either. The company also advocates for a simple, minimal-ingredient diet, believing that delicious meals don’t require complicated recipes.
Nutritional Value
Spot & Tango’s recipes are carefully crafted to provide a balanced mix of essential nutrients, including proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. This ensures that dogs receive complete nutrition to support healthy growth and strength. For example, the Turkey + Quinoa fresh meal contains approximately 10% crude protein, 2% crude fiber, and 6% crude fat, with the remainder consisting of moisture.
Each recipe is also supplemented with Spot & Tango’s nutrient blend to ensure your dog receives all the essential ingredients. This blend contains vital vitamins and minerals for healthy development, including fish oil, kelp, dicalcium phosphate, potassium chloride, and vitamins E, A, and D, among others.
Spot & Tango provides the calorie content for each recipe, making it easier to determine how much to feed your dog based on their daily caloric needs. For example, the Fresh Turkey + Quinoa contains 1,625 kCal/kg, while the Cod + Salmon UnKibble has a higher calorie count at 4,193 kCal/kg. Every ingredient is carefully chosen to maximize vitamins and minerals, ensuring your dog gets balanced nutrition. When you sign up, you’ll receive a personalized meal plan recommendation, which you can adjust over time if needed.
How it works?
The sign-up process is straightforward. After entering your name, email address, and zip code, you’ll provide your dog’s name, gender, and whether they are neutered or spayed. You’ll then select your dog’s breed or mix of breeds, input their birthday, body type, weight or estimated weight, lifestyle, and any health conditions.
Keep in mind that Spot & Tango operates on a subscription basis, meaning your credit card will be automatically charged, and food will be shipped monthly. You can pause or cancel your subscription anytime by contacting the company via email.
Pricing
After answering questions about your dog, you’ll have the option to choose between Spot & Tango’s dry UnKibble, starting at $1 per meal, or their fresh frozen meals, starting at $2 per meal—though the price varies depending on your dog’s caloric requirements. Both options come in three flavors, including hypoallergenic, grain-free, and a recipe designed for picky eaters. The ingredients are clearly listed, making it easy to select the best fit for your dog’s tastes.
For a 20-pound miniature poodle, meal prices range from about $2.50 to $3.50 each (or $35 to $49 per week), depending on the recipe. The options, listed from least to most expensive, are Turkey and Red Quinoa, Beef and Millet, and Lamb and Brown Rice. You can choose one recipe or try a combination of all three. I decided to try two options: Turkey and Red Quinoa, and half Beef and Millet.
For a larger dog, like a 90-pound Great Dane, the cost of the fresh Turkey + Quinoa recipe would be about $102.42 per week. The Beef + Brown Rice recipe would cost approximately $110.13 per week, while the Lamb + Sweet Potato recipe would be around $156.38 per week.
Shipping
After signing up, the communication from the company was excellent. We received an immediate email confirmation of the order, followed by notifications with a shipping tracking number when the box was about to ship and after it was delivered. Spot & Tango delivers to all continental U.S. states through FedEx Ground, UPS, and USPS.
The box arrived without any issues, and the food was still very cold thanks to the eco-friendly insulated packaging made from biodegradable corn starch. The meals were vacuum-sealed in in food safe, certified BPA-free pouches. For a 20-pound dog, there was one pouch per day, designed to be divided into two meals.
Since Spot & Tango meals are completely fresh and free from preservatives, they should be stored in the refrigerator for up to four days or in the freezer for up to six months.
